July Wrap Up

July was a really slow reading month for me. I only read two books last month and I fully blame that on the worst reading slump I have yet to run into. I told Noah I felt a slump coming on only two weeks into July and he just laughed and said “I think you are always in a slump.” I guess he is not wrong haha.

Lets discuss these books in more detail.

“Truly Devious” By Maureen Johnson

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Stevie is a teenager obsessed with the Ellingham murders that took place in the 1930’s. She somehow got the chance to attend Ellingham Academy for her Junior year of high school and now she hopes she can crack the unsolved murder case. What she wasn’t expecting was for one of her own classmates to be murdered right under her nose. Will Stevie be able to solve the mysterious murders or will she herself be taken as a victim?

I started this book on July first and finished on July second, that is how good this book was! I am excited to continue the series.

I picked this for my first book club pick for my close friends and we all had pretty mixed reviews, from a DNF all the way to five stars with everything in between. It made for a really interesting conversation and I personally can’t wait to read more books with my group.

“Daisy Jones and The Six” By Taylor Jenkins Reid

Rating: 3 out of 5.

At a young age Daisy started to find a love for the reckless life of a rock and roll star. Hanging around bands and being exposed to sex, drugs, and booze; she thought this was the life she was meant to live. Her time spent amongst these bands lead her to finding her voice in both singing and writing, she knew she was meant for big things but what she didn’t know is that she couldn’t get there alone.

Pretty soon after, a producer for a big band, The Six, Heard her singing in a bar and he knew that she was the voice that could make The Six reach the top of the charts. The hard part was convincing the bad to let her join. Will Daisy catch her big break or watch her life come crashing down from her addictions?

I read this as a buddy read with one of my new friends and honestly neither of us really enjoyed it. We both felt the interview style was an interesting way to tell a story but that it made it so we lacked a connection with the characters that builds in a regular writing style. I do believe that if I listened to this on audio that I would have enjoyed it more. I also think this book put me into my reading slump.

Favorite Quotes

“All I will say is that you show up for your friends on their hardest days. And you hold their hand through the roughest parts. Life is about who is holding your hand and, I think, whose hand you commit to holding.”

“Where her books were, she was. Get the books right and the rest will follow. Now she could address the rest of the room.”

July Wrap up

At the beginning of this month I made a pretty big TBR hopeful list for myself that I really wanted to tackle. Did I complete my hopefuls or did I fall short? Lets find out!

The Honest Truth

These three books were my main hopefuls for this month! I got “The Maidens” and “One Last Stop” in my June Book of the Month box and was dying to read them! “Devil’s Knot” came in a true crime premium book box from One Night Stand With a Book and I have been dying to read it since!

I am going to be honest with you, I only read one of these hopefuls and that was “One Last Stop” by Casey McQuiston. I know I will get around to the other two books hopefully soon! I have read so many great reviews about “The Maidens” that I need to hop on that train soon!

What Did I Really Read

Did you really think I only finished one book this last month? I am a slow reader but come on, I’m not that slow!

I read a total of four books this month, one of which was a graphic novel. Have you read any of these books? Would you count a graphic novel towards your reading goals?

Five Star Ratings

“One Last Stop” by Casey McQuiston

I gave this book a five star rating because it truly deserved it!

The characters in this LGBTQ book were written so well and I could really find someway to relate to each and everyone of them. From true crime to psychics you can find some reason to love these characters.

I hope everyone will give this book a try.

“Black Lantern” by Chris Bodily

This was my first ever graphic novel, I stumbled across this gem at an art festival in Utah! Turns out Chris is also from Utah and created this gorgeous piece of work!

The cat Julius is my absolute favorite! He is so cute and hilarious! I haven’t wrote an official review yet but you should give it a look!

Four Star Reads

“Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens

I gave this a four star read because it didn’t fully live up to the hype but was still really good! It started off a little slow but the ending was so good!

This is a very talked about book and honestly I would be so surprised if you haven’t read this one yet, but if you haven’t here is your sign!

Three Star Reads

“A Type of Hunger” by Pamela D. Beverly

I found this book just scrolling through blogs and read a comment about an author wishing for some more reviews, and so that’s what I did.

This book received three stars because it had many grammar errors that were very distracting and the story felt very rushed towards the end.

This was a self published book so the grammar errors make sense and are expected. Please support Indy Authors!

Overall

Last month went a lot better than I originally expected. I have lately only been reading two or three books each month so to get four books finished I am pretty happy with that! I am hoping I can keep this momentum up for August and read at least four books!

QOTD: How many books did you finish this month? Did you read all the books on you list or did you mood read?
