Book Review: “Raising Hare” By Chloe Dalton

I had only read one review about this book before I went searching for it on Libby. When I did find it on Libby it said that this 4 hour long audiobook would be an 18 week wait! That is crazy to me. I ended up complaining to a new friend, their next response was an audible credit for the book. I was speechless, such a kind thing of them to do!

So without any knowledge of what this book really was I decided to dive right in. I am so glad I listened to the one and only review I read.

“I tell myself not to count the years ahead in which she might never again come, but rather cherish the days she has given me of her own free will, when she lowered her species’ instinctive guard against humans, and shared the beauty and mystery of her presence in silent and graceful companionship. I will remember her leaving, but I will always know that before she did, she always, first, looked back.”

“She has taught me patience. And as someone who has made their living through words, she has made me consider the dignity and persuasiveness of silence.”

Chloe Dalton, Raising Hare: A Memoir

Synopsis

Imagine you could hold a baby hare and bottle-feed it. Imagine that it lived under your roof and lolloped around your bedroom at night, drumming on the duvet cover when it wanted your attention. Imagine that, over two years later, it still ran in from the fields when you called it and slept in your house for hours on end and gave birth to leverets in your study. For political advisor and speechwriter Chloe Dalton, who spent lockdown deep in the English countryside, far away from her usual busy London life, this became her unexpected reality.

In February 2021, Dalton stumbles upon a newborn hare—a leveret—that had been chased by a dog. Fearing for its life, she brings it home, only to discover how impossible it is to rear a wild hare, most of whom perish in captivity from either shock or starvation. Through trial and error, she learns to feed and care for the leveret with every intention of returning it to the wilderness. Instead, it becomes her constant companion, wandering the fields and woods at night and returning to Dalton’s house by day. Though Dalton feared that the hare would be preyed upon by foxes, stoats, feral cats, raptors, and even people, she never tried to restrict it to the house. Each time the hare leaves, Chloe knows she may never see it again. Yet she also understands that to confine it would be its own kind of death.

Raising Hare chronicles their journey together, while also taking a deep dive into the lives and nature of hares, and the way they have been viewed historically in art, literature, and folklore. We witness first-hand the joy at this extraordinary relationship between human and animal, which serves as a reminder that the best things, and most beautiful experiences, arise when we least expect them.

After listening to this book I still probably couldn’t tell you the difference between a hare and a rabbit. However, now I do know that there are differences and not just because they are from different regions of the world.

This book ended up being a memoir to my happy surprise. I love listening to memoirs and this one changed the game for me. I normally listen to celebrity memoirs about their lives. But this book focused more on the animal rather than the human and I adored that!

The book was very well researched which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I was learning new things as I went and just seeing the passion our author had for taking care of her orphaned hare was inspiring!

This book really focused on how what we as humans do in our every day lives can really affect the wild life around us. Mowing the long grass that has gathered in your field, The roads we create, The trees that we cut down to build a new building, even just Hiking in new areas that animals aren’t used to seeing humans around. All these things that seem so normal to us is quickly ruining animals habits, their food sources and homes. They can’t adapt as fast as we destroy.

The author really drives home how important it is that we treat animals with respect and don’t make them bend at our will. When she came across this little baby Hare (Leverette) she knew if she were to take it home that she couldn’t change anything about the way it lived, she vowed not to make it a pet. In doing so the hare thrived. It comes to show that when we do take in wild animals the changes we make to its surroundings and daily routine can cause stress and ultimately harm the animal.

The storytelling was beautiful and I know it will stick with me for years to come. As an animal lover it was really nice to hear this perspective as even doing something out of the goodness of my heart can’t fix the damage done.

“Under the subtle influence of the hare, my own wants have simplified. To be dependable in love and friendship more than in work. To leave the land in a more natural state than I found it. And to take better care of what is to hand, seeing beauty and value in the ordinary.”

Book Review: “I’m Glad My Mom Died” By Jannette McCurdy

As I write this review I am watching ICarly. I grew up loving ICarly and it was something me and my brother really enjoyed doing together. When I heard Jannette wrote a book about her life I was so excited to read it, but sadly I failed to pre order it and of course it was sold out immediately the day it released. Luckily I am a Scribd subscriber and they had the audio book as part of my subscription. Let me tell you, I devoured this book!

“I take a longer look at the words on her headstone.
Brave, kind, loyal, sweet, loving, graceful, strong, thoughtful, funny, genuine, hopeful, playful, insightful, and on and on…
Was she, though? Was she any of those things? The words make me angry. I can’t look at them any longer.
Why do we romanticize the dead? Why can’t we be honest about them?”

“I’m becoming an angry person with no tolerance for anyone. I’m aware of this shift and yet have no desire to change it. If anything, I want it. It’s armor. It’s easier to be angry than to feel to pain underneath it.”

Jennette McCurdy, I’m Glad My Mom Died

Synopsis

Jannette was only 6 years old when her mother decided she should start her acting career, stating she only wants Jannette to have all the opportunities she never had growing up. Jannette and her mother were best friends or so Jannette thought until she started realizing in her adulthood that her mothers intentions might have not been the most pure. Follow along Jannette’s heart breaking story of becoming a young childhood actress with many eating disorders brought upon her by her own mother and how she worked to overcome the impossible.

“I don’t like knowing people in the context of things. “Oh, that’s the person I work out with. That’s the person I’m in a book club with. That’s the person I did that show with.” Because once the context ends, so does the friendship”

Review

To say this book was heartbreaking would be an understatement. I feel like Jannette had her childhood taken away from her without her even knowing which is so sad!

When watching ICarly you would never be able to tell that she was going through so many difficult struggles in her life which only comes to show that she was a very talented actress but she never really got to make that choice for herself. When she told her mom she didn’t want to act her mother would gas light her into thinking it is exactly what she wants and needs in life.

Jannette’s story is so heartbreaking and I couldn’t even begin to imagine what I would have done in her shoes. She is unbelievably strong for coming out and telling her story and I am grateful she was part of my childhood.

I hope everyone will take the time to read her story because it needs to be heard!

“I’m done being a good sport. I resent being a good sport. If I wasn’t such a good sport to begin with, I wouldn’t be in this predicament in the first place. I wouldn’t be on this shitty show saying these shitty lines on this shitty set with this shitty hairstyle. Maybe my life would be entirely different right now. I fantasize about it being different.”

Book Review: “Talking As Fast As I Can” By Lauren Graham

I am a long time fan of the TV show “Gilmore Girls”. This is actually one of me and my boyfriends favorite shows! I love all the characters and I feel like it is a show you can just sit back and just laugh and forget about your day to. I am not someone who typically reads non fiction and memoirs but when I saw that this book existed I had no choice but to grab a copy and dive in!

“Because here’s the thing: I was fine on my own, and so are you. But it can be hard when you feel ready for Happy Couplehood and you seem to have missed the train.”

Synopsis

Lauren Graham is everything you expect her to be and more. In this memoir she breaks down her life from where she lived when she was little to her struggle to break into the world of acting all the way to the end where she is asked back for “Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life”. Unlike most memoirs I can guarantee you will be laughing and crying from the turn of a page!

Review

All I can say is that Lauren Graham is so much like Lorelai it is uncanny! You can tell that in real life she talks just as fast as she does on the show! The writing in the book was pretty fast paced just as you would have imagined.

I loved everything about this book. Especially reading what it took to get into acting and becoming the star she is now. I remember one part where she was asked to show her naked butt in a scene and she talked about how in that moment she had to decide what kind of actor she wanted to be. She could get her first big break by doing this part but is that how she really wanted to get into show business? In the end she chose to decline the part and she thanked herself later on in life. I love that even when she was about to excel in her career she wasn’t willing to damage her values.

Another part that really stood out to me was at the end of the book and I really don’t want to give too much away here but there is a part where she explains this person inside her that she calls Mrs. Jackson, she is the one who is always putting other best interest at heart such as do you really want that tattoo? Maybe think about it for a year and if you still like the idea get it then. She liked being able to say oh no that was just Mrs. Jackson talking you do whatever your heart decides.

Overall this was a book you did not want to miss and it really did talk a lot about her time on the “Gilmore Girls” set and what it was like knowing each actor and some of her favorite and even least favorite scenes. It was fun to get a background look into what it took to make the show come to life! I think if you like “Gilmore Girls” you should really read this one!

“Because who wants to Fast Forward anyway? You might miss some of the good parts.”
