Fourth Wing & Iron Flame Theories: Before Onyx Storm

I, much like many other book enthusiasts, am obsessed with the Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros. I have read both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame twice in the last year and have came up with theories for the upcoming books, along with taking note from many other readers theories. So I have decided to put my thoughts on the page before Onyx Storm is released to see how many of my thoughts were accurate. I’ll probably make a new post after my Onyx Storm read with more up to date thoughts as well.

Please let me know if you agree or disagree with any of these as I would love to have more conversations surrounding this amazing series!

Disclaimer: I have seen many theories on Tiktok and Instagram over the last year. There is no way I can remember all the people who have talked about these theories. Most of these theories I have heard multiple creators discussing so I am unsure where the original thought may have came from.

Spoilers will be ahead so if you have not read both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame please do not continue on.

My Personal Thoughts & Theories

These are Theories I discovered on my own before anyone else’s thoughts came to light. I am not claiming that I am the only one who has had these revelations just that I hadn’t personally heard them before I thought them.

Regarding the Name “Onyx Storm” for the Third Book

I have a few different thoughts on this. Most people think “Onyx” is regarding Xaden’s Onyx eyes, as Rebecca mentions this so many times throughout the books, but I don’t fully agree.

  1. In Xaden’s Bonus chapter 16 he mentions that he can feel Tairns Onyx bond line. I think it is possible that “Onyx” is referring to Tairn and “Storm”, of course, is talking about Violet.
  2. When Mira shows up at Aretia, her and Violet go and find the Wyvren Corpses and notice that they have an Onyx Stone with an intricate rune carved on them. We learn that this is how these Wyvren were created and controlled.

Chapter 2: Fourth Wing – Amber’s Irony

This is just a fun thing that I noticed upon my re-read.

  1. At the End of Chapter two Violet literally has Jack Barlowe by the balls after he tried killing her on the Parapet. The redhead holding the Roll says –

“We don’t wait for trials around here. We just Execute.”

Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing Pg. 28
  • Well, as we learn later in the book, the red head is Amber, and how did Amber die? Oh that’s right, she helped first year cadets break into Violets room while Violet was sleeping so they could try and kill her! Xaden, with the help of Violets memories through Tairn, Gets her executed for not following the Codex. No trial, just execution!
  • Amber literally foreshadowed her own death in the second chapter of this book!

Violet and Xaden: Mating Bond

This one is a bit out there but it ties into something I will discuss later from other creators theories that I have heard.

  1. We all know that Tairn and Sgaeyl have a mating bond which connects Tairn, Sgaeyl, Violet, and Xaden. However, Violet and Xaden both seem to be closely bonded. Xaden even saying that he has been hers since the first time he laid eyes on her.
    • We have heard about dragons having a mating bond in the past but no one has ever said that those dragon’s riders get this close of a bond to one another. Meaning that maybe this has never happened before.
    • Violet is having nightmares in Iron Flame about the Venin General, by the end of the book we realize the General was actually in Xadens dreams telling him he would turn for love. So somehow Violet was able to see his dreams. I think this is due to their own mating bond.
    • Violet and Xaden can’t seem to be apart for very long, much how they describe Tairn and Sgaeyl can’t stay apart from one other either due to the longing and need for their mated pair. In the third bonus chapter we received in the paperback version of Fourth Wing (Xaden’s POV to chapter 27) we find out that he wasn’t dragged to Montserrat by Sgaeyl cause she needed to be near Tairn, it was actually because Xaden couldn’t stand to be far from Violet.
    • To piggy back off that last thought these two are so horny it’s exhausting! They seem to get moody when they aren’t near one another and in good standing much like their dragons.

Tecarus Is Bad!

I feel like we all have bad vibes about this man, but upon my first read, I had a feeling that he had to be in cahoots with the Venin.

  1. The Venin literally skipped over Cordyn, where he resides.
  2. He just happens to have a ton of info compiled on the Venin? Sure he’s studying them but he knew an awful lot.
  3. He told Violet if she stayed with him he could promise Violet and her family’s safety. How can you promise that unless you have some kind of deal with the Venin?
    • We know he collects rare and unique Items but we also know the Venin really want Violet alive. He could have just as easily traded her to them for a deal.
  4. If he is playing a bigger part in this I feel like Cat would have no idea. So this could give us a further point of contention with Cat later in the series where she has to decide whose side she’s truly on.

Theories I Have Heard From Other Sources

These are going to be my thoughts on theories I have heard floating around on the internet; I’ll add if I agree or disagree and why. Honestly, a lot of my theories clash with one another so I know not all of these are going to hit the mark but I’m excited to see what we as a fandom got correct and what may have gone completely over our heads.

Brennan and Tairn – Naolin Betrayal

  1. This one hurts to admit but I think Brennan and Tairn know a few more things than they are letting on, especially about Naolin. This theory is about how Naolin is actually alive because he turned Venin to save Brennan.
    • Brennan and Naolin were beyond close. In fact, it was pretty heavily implied that they had romantic feelings for one another, and as our Venin dream General has said: “You will turn for love.” I think that is exactly what happened with Naolin. He saw Brennan, the love of his life, dying and was unable to save him with his current supply of power so he pulled from the earth.
    • Tairn wasn’t really wanting to bond and they chalked that up to him still mourning the loss of his previous rider but honestly I think he was just feeling very betrayed.
    • This is a theory that I think is highly likely and if it is the case and Violet finds out she is going to feel very hurt and blindsided by two people she truly loves and trusts.
    • This brings me back to my first theory where Onyx Storm could be about Tairn and Violet and mainly focusing on their trust and overall bond. As we know Tairn hasn’t always been the most upfront with his information so it’s already a point of contention.
    • What would be worse to Violet is her brother withholding information… and as we’ve seen in the last two books, she doesn’t seem to handle being left out very well. This leads us to a different theory regarding her siblings (Please see A Sibling Betrayal for more info)

A Sibling Betrayal

People are pointing out that the original riders were siblings; one who bonded a Dragon, one who bonded a Gryphon, and one who took from the earth. People think that it is no coincidence that their are three Sorrengail Siblings and are drawing parallels.

  1. People think that one of Violets siblings will betray her and end up working closely with the Venin, and possibly even turn Venin at some point.
    • I don’t want to believe this theory but the next one (The Orange Dragon Theory) made me waver on this decision. I think if any of her siblings were to turn against her it would probably be Brennan. As mentioned above, people (myself included) think that Naolin and Brennan were in love, and if Naolin is alive and is truly Venin then maybe Brennan has darker intentions….
    • What makes this one so hard to believe is the fact that Brennan has been alive trying to fight venin for the past 6 years! He does seem to be a bit of a stickler and not willing to spread his armies too thin to help innocent people but I think his intentions are for the best…
    • Maybe he truly is just trying to find a cure! And maybe he takes a wrong step or two, causing him to do some not-so-great things, but I don’t want to think he is capable of destruction.

Orange Dragon Theory

This actually stems from a pretty sound logic that all dragon colors match their riders intentions or rankings. Black dragons bond powerful people and likely leaders: Violet and Tairn, Melgren and Codagh. Blue dragons bond the most tutheless: Xaden and Sgaeyl. (Fun fact: Sgaeyl is described as a navy blue dragon. To get “navy” you mix black and blue)

  1. Orange dragons are known to be unpredictable so the theory is that riders who have an orange dragon are likely to be bad people or have bad intentions.
    • Jack Barlowe bonded an Orange dragon (Baide) and we all knew he had ill intentions and turned Venin while in the College.
    • Varrish is Bonded to Solas and he clearly had ill intentions with his eyes set on Violet.
    • So who else of note has an orange dragon?
      • Amber
        • Amber was a strict rule follower but ended up being executed by Dragon fire for breaking the Codex. While not one of the worst people, she made an unpredictable, bad choice that brought her to her death.
      • Brennan
        • As mentioned above there is a theory that one of the siblings betrays Violet. Brennan having an Orange Dragon makes things a bit suspicious. I don’t think he will be a bad guy but I think he will make some questionable choices and ultimately become dangerously unpredictable.
      • Imogen
        • This one breaks my heart. I only recently heard this part of the theory so I haven’t had time to find the exact moments for this in my re-reads… but supposedly Imogen has used her memory erasing signet a few times on Violet already. In a few chapters, Violet says she woke up not remembering why she’s so sore and thinks it is probably due to the workout Imogen had her working on the day before. If this is truly the case I hope its for the good of Aretia and the revolution, and not for some deeper, darker reason…

Violets Second Signet

I personally have no clue what her second signet is but I have heard many thoughts on the topic. It could honestly be anything, but I do believe it will be some kind of “mental” power.

Rebecca Yarros has said that there is one line in Iron Flame that confirms her second signet, which is probably the most frustrating news I have heard, seeing as how we don’t have any real answers until Onyx Storm is released.

  1. Truth Sayer
    • Violet has a thirst for the truth, she has been demanding the truth from everyone, especially Xaden, all throughout both books. This has caused a lot of issues between her relationships which gives a lot of strength to this second signet theory.
  2. Compulsion
    • This to me is the weakest possible theory as compulsion would be an insane signet for her to have. Violet would be extremely over-powered if this was the case.
    • To back this theory up people quote Violet when she screamed “You Will Survive!” at the end of Iron Flame and then Xaden turned Venin so he could kill the Venin General.
  3. Dream Walker
    • This is just a fun Second Signet that I was messing around with. I really don’t think this is the case for Violet but possible.
    • Violet was having dreams about the Venin telling her that she would turn for love but at the end of Iron Flame we learn that the Venin was actually visiting Xaden. So how did Violet see these dreams? (This goes with my Mating Bond Theory above.)
    • If it isn’t Violets second signet, it is possible this is a Venin Power and maybe the Venin was “Dream Walking” in both of their dreams. I am undecided on this but it feels important.
  4. Strategist
    • Rebecca said that Violet’s second signet is kind of dull compared to some theories she has heard being tossed around. So I think this theory has a good leg to stand on.
    • This theory is basically saying that Violet has a need for information. When she has deduced things in the past, like when she discovered Xaden could have a second signet, she felt her gravity shift. This can easily be explained by the fact that maybe she felt a bit blind-sided, but she still had a physical feeling that deduced this information. She seems to always have the answers as she grew up to be a scribe.
    • I think her having a second signet that helps her deduce information quicker would fit her well. A Rider with a Scribe’s mind.

Dragon Born – Mother of Dragons

This theory is a bit out there but I’m not the only one who feels like it might be a possibility. I didn’t put this in as a possible second signet, as I am not sure it would classify as that since this power would have come before Threshing, even before she was born.

  1. Dragon Born
    • This theory is basically stating that the cure Violet’s mother took when she was sick and pregnant with Violet was made with Dragon Egg shells and other Dragon related items, causing the discoloration of Violet’s hair and possibly even un-tapped power.
  2. Mother Of Dragons
    • Basically Andarna states she waited 600 years to hatch; waiting for someone worthy of her power. It was as though it was a prophecy that needed to be fulfilled. Violet is a Rider with a Scribe’s mind who is the key to winning this war. Violet can talk to other dragons, Violet can do and say pretty much anything she would like and Tairn seems to allow it. Yes, he is still stern, but Violet almost always gets her way. So maybe she has the ability to bend the dragons’ will.
  3. What Would Each of These Even Mean?
    • She was able to talk to Codah, who is the most powerful Dragon of the current times, and also a few other dragons throughout the two books; like the two green’s who could smell her dragon scale armor or Sawyer’s dragon when she was trying to save him in that last battle. This is crazy, as it is widely known that you are not supposed to speak to dragons whom you are not bonded too.
      • Some people say she is able to do this because the dragons have respect for her and Tairn. But why is that the case with the two green’s before Threshing then?
    • At the end of Iron Flame, when Xaden goes to pull power from the Earth, Sgaeyl shouts: “You cannot!. I chose you!”. In which Xaden in his mind says: “But Violet chose me, too.”
      • A Dragon chooses their rider, and this line from Xaden saying that ‘Violet also picked him’ and he ‘chose her over Sgaeyl’, leans into the “Dragon Born” Theory. Maybe she has a bit of dragon in her as well; she chose to love him and be by his side which sparked their own mating bond to be put into place. This part I haven’t heard anyone else really discussing so I could be wildly off the mark, but I think it’s interesting to think about.

Violet Dated Aaric’s Older Brother Halden

This is a plot point many people have been talking about for Onyx Storm. We know Violet has had a few love interests in her past, or at least a few friends with benefits, but we never got any names.

So when Aaric and Violet where in the Kings Wards trying to find the journals, Xaden got a little jealous! People think it would be interesting to have Aaric’s older brother Halden show up in the Third book as a past love interest who she finds comfort in while Xaden is off being Venin. This would spark some jealousy in Xaden, which is only fair seeing how we already read about his rendezvous with Cat. Plus, jelaous Xaden sounds kinda hot…

  • Why Halden?
    • Well as we learned Violet grew up around Aaric and his family due to her mom being closely aligned with the king. SO, it only makes sense that she knows Halden. But how much older is he than her? That’s the only thing holding me back from her having a past relationship with him… and I don’t see her sparking anything new up with how close her and Xaden actually are, despite their arguments. I’m not sure if this will really come to fruition, but it could make things pretty interesting.

Things I Absolutely Don’t Want

  1. Dain to be a love interest (again).
    • Let this just be a rekindling of a friendship. Nothing more, please!
  2. One of her dragons die.
    • If Tairn or Andarna dies in any of the upcoming books I will be devastated. If they keep more secrets.. fine, whatever, we can recover from that.. but one of them dying? No!
  3. Losing someone in the Iron Squad!
    • If either Rhi, Swayer or Ridoc die.. I will be destroyed! I feel like I’m asking for a lot here with how crazy things are getting, but I can’t take any more heartbreak…
  4. Xaden and Violet not being “end game”.
    • From what I’ve heard, Rebecca says Violet and Xaden are end game.. but I can’t be sure about that until we reach the end of the book. Please don’t break my heart completely!
  5. Truth Sayer Second Signet
    • This second signet theory just feels too obvious to me and so it would bum me out if this was the case.
  6. Violet’s dad being alive.
    • This is a theory I didn’t discuss above because I haven’t looked into it enough to know the details… but from what I have heard: people are speculating that her dad turned Venin due to the heartbreak of loosing Brennan.
      • If this is true I will be so upset. Violet has already dealt with so much with her family, and Brennan being alive was great, but the heartbreak of thinking he was dead for 6 years only to find out he was alive but never came for her is so sad… If her dad were to do this as well I am unsure I could forgive anyone in her family.
        • I don’t think this theory has a lot of ground to stand on. Her dad tried teaching her and prepping her for this future. He knew what was out there and what was coming for them. I couldn’t imagine him dedicating so much time to the cause for him to turn against all this. The scribes literally rewrote history but yet he kept the only book that spoke of Venin so history couldn’t be completely erased. Ugh, I’m upset just thinking about it.
  7. Violet’s mom being a Venin.
    • This theory was more prominent before Iron Flame came out but I still hear it circling around.
      • People state that her mom was sick because she was Venin while she was pregnant with Violet. The evidence being the story of when she was a kid and her mom had red eyes from all the work and stress. That is a pretty easy way to turn that story around and make people think she isn’t Venin. But if she was Venin she would know the cure already cause she wasn’t Venin in these books as far as we can tell. So if she was cured, they wouldn’t have needed Nolan to “fix” Jack Barlowe.
      • This theory just feels like a stretch to me now that she is dead… I guess we will see.

Conclusion

These books mean the absolute world to me. I have not stopped thinking about them since the moment I read them last November. I have made so many of my friends and family read these books so I could have people to discuss them with. I think this series has really brought a lot of people together, so I am so thankful they exist and that I gave them a chance.

Coming up with theories has been an absolute blast! These books leave a lot of room to theorize, and with three more books to go, all I can say is that I am terrified! Please, Rebecca, don’t break our hearts!

2024 Book Superlatives

2024 started off kind of rocky. I didn’t get my first 5 star read until April which had me a bit worried! However, the year ended strong with me reading 75 books and having 17 5 Star reads total! I am so happy with how my reading year went and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you!

Heading into 2025, I have plans to be more active in posting my book reviews. This past year I took time to just enjoy reading and took a step back from posting content so I could focus on my mental health and overall enjoyment of my hobbies. Clearly, this step back really helped me as I read 20 more books this year than the last. I am excited to see where 2025 will take me.

Reading Stats

These stats are brought to you by StoryGraph! This is my favorite way to track my reading, if you would like to follow me my username is Bai_Books.

2024 Reading Goal

I planned on reading only 55 books this year, but I quickly surpassed this!

This is by far the most successful year yet!

So many pages!!! It’s wild!

I would love to read some longer books going into 2025. However, this seems like a good mix to me.

Every year I say I am going to read more non-fiction. However, This graph looks pretty similar to previous years.

Maybe 2025 will be my non-fiction era…Who knows?

I used to say that thrillers and mysteries were my favorite genre, I don’t think I can say that any longer. This makes me sad but I did read a lot of great romance books which changed my life.

I do think I had a decent mix of genres this year but I would love to see some of these other genres rise in ranks in the coming years. Mostly fantasy as I would like to dip my toe into this genre a bit further and step out of my comfort zone a bit more.

This year was the best for me format wise! I found my love for E-books this year and I foresee this section growing exponentially next year. Also, I would love to see more audiobooks next year as well, I plan on focusing on more of my hobbies in the new year so audiobooks will be great as background noise!

Jennifer Lynn Barnes really killed it this year! The Inheritance Games Series really sucked me in! She solidified herself as an all time favorite author for me!

I started to use a .25 rating system this year and I really enjoyed it! I do think I will go to a .50 system next year as my tracking sheet on google docs will only calculate .50 and not the .25 and that’s ok! I like being able to have more options than just a flat number rating as books don’t always fit into those categories for me.

Top 10 Books

As mentioned above, I read 17 5 star books but some of my first top ten will be my 4.5 Star reads. I read a lot of manga and graphic novels which made it in my 5 star reads this year so they will be getting their own category. Also I rate my books on vibes so my Top 10 books are all ones that really stuck with me!

Synopsis

For the first time in her life, Clementine “Emmy” Ryder has no idea what she’s doing. She’s accomplished everything on her to-do list. She left her small hometown of Meadowlark, Wyoming; went to college; and made a career for herself by doing her favorite thing: riding horses. But after an accident makes it impossible for her to get back into the saddle, she has no choice but to return to the hometown she always wanted to escape.

Luke Brooks is Meadowlark’s most notorious bad boy, bar owner, and bachelor. He’s also the unofficial fifth member of the Ryder family. As Emmy’s older brother’s best friend, Luke spent most of his childhood antagonizing her. It’s been years since he’s seen her, but when she walks into his bar and back into his life, he can’t take his eyes off her. Despite his better judgment, he wants to do a whole lot more than just look at her.

Emmy’s got too much on her mind to think about romance. And Luke knows he should stay away from his best friend’s younger sister. But what if Luke is just what Emmy needs to get her spark back? Or will they both go up in flames?

“Sometimes, it was just easier for me to live under the piles rather than face what might be in them. It wasn’t logical, but my brain didn’t really work normally.”

Review

I read Done and Dusted twice over the span of a month. The first time was via physical book where I marked all my favorite quotes directly and then the second time was via Audio book where I followed along in the physical copy and took notes to prepare for my Live discussion for my Book Club.

I loved the book just as much the second time around and I am so glad I gave the audio a listen because the narrators were so good!

I want to remind everyone that I rate books on the vibe I feel after I have finished them. So me giving this book a five star rating in no way means this was a perfect book, it was just a perfect book for me at the time of reading it.

This book was a really fast paced read for me, in fact I read it in only a few sittings my first time around while the audio I finished in a few hours. What made this book such a quick read was the character dynamics. I really loved each character and how they connected to each other. You didn’t need their full background to understand the relationships between any of the characters in the book.

The friendship Emmy and Teddy had was seamless and so well done! She knew Emmy inside out and could anticipate Emmy’s needs before she could even voice them. When Emmy needed her the most she was right by her side no questions asked. I firmly believe that we all could use a friend like Teddy.

The Sibling Relationships between Emmy, Wes and Gus just made sense, she’s their baby sister so of course they are fiercely over protective of her. Their family is all just so close that no one batted an eye when she came home and just helped her get settled in. Sure, Gus may have had a few questions but what Older brother wouldn’t?

The spice in this book was top tier for me. It may have not been the spiciest book I have ever read but it sure made me feel some sort of way! I could feel their chemistry straight out of the gate but throw in some spice and their relationship was on fire!

I love Luke Brooks with all my heart. He has made it to my top five Book Boyfriends which is a true accomplishment with the amount of romance I have been reading lately. Luke never doubted Emmy and helped her find trust in herself again. He wasn’t nearly as over protective as her brothers but damn that bar scene… A little protectiveness never hurt no one!

I had two issues with this book and lets not really call them issues.

Small Spoilers Ahead

1. I would have liked more background info into Emmy from before she came back to Meadowlark. We know she had a riding accident which shook her confidence with her career. We also know that her Ex was a bit of a walking read flag, I mean who orders their girlfriend a steak knowing she doesn’t eat red meat and just tells her to try it… no! But I would have liked to know more about her ex and ultimately what made her break up with him via post it. It may have not been too important to the plot but I kept waiting for more trauma to come out about this I guess.

2. This is a cowboy romance and I felt like by the time we got to the end of the book she was back to racing like a pro but we hardly got any horse riding.. We had way more riding of another sort which I loved don’t get me wrong… But I would have liked to see more of her progression towards being able to get past her mental block and beat her own record. I know these books don’t have to be realistic but it just didn’t feel too believable to me.

Ok, the last thing I want to Highlight is the ADHD rep! Finding out Lyla Sage has ADHD made so much sense because she nailed what it felt like to be ADHD with sensory issues. I am not sure i have read another book with ADHD representation before this and if I have I clearly didn’t relate to it nearly as much as I did with this book. I am so grateful to see this done so well in a book I love so dearly. So, Thank you, Lyla Sage for putting Emmy out into the world.

“I know being diagnosed with ADHD looks different for all of us, but if you’ve ever had a hard time explaining why you leave literally everything until the last minute, why you feel out of control, why your tongue feels like it doesn’t belong in in your mouth when the music is too loud, or any of the countless other things we feel that are apart of ADHD, you might see yourself in Done and Dusted.”

Lyla Sage, Done and Dusted

QOTD: Lyla said at her release party for Lost and Lassoed that their was originally 5 books planned for this series, we are only getting four. Who do you think the 5th book was going to be about?

My Thoughts: I feel like it was going to be Amos Ryder, Emmy’s Dad. I get not writing this book as I feel like Amos is so in love with his wife even though she passed so long ago, that all he needs is his kids and the ranch.

Book Review: “Play Along” By Liz Tomforde

This is the fourth book in the “Windy City” Series by Liz Tomforde. This book is the most recent one to come out with only one book left in the series that will release April 2025. I honestly have no clue how I am going to wait till April to read the next book, how unfair?!

“Mmm,” he hums. “I should warn you, Ken, I like it when you’re mean. It does something to me.”

Synopsis

Kennedy

I’m the only woman on staff for the Windy City Warriors, and after years of putting up with a sexist lead doctor, I’m desperate to land my dream job with a new team next year. All I have to do is maintain my professional reputation for my final season in Chicago.

But a Las Vegas run-in with the team’s shortstop threatens it all, leaving me with a fuzzy memory and a ring on my left hand.

Now, not only am I legally bound to the most persistent man I’ve ever met, but thanks to Isaiah’s scheme to save my job, I have to pretend the whole thing was a planned elopement and not a drunken mistake.

Isaiah Rhodes is reckless, impulsive, and frustratingly charming. He’s also my brand-new husband.

They got the saying wrong. What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas… sometimes it follows you right back home.

Isaiah

As the shortstop for Chicago’s professional baseball team, I’ve had my fair share of fun. But that all ended the day Kennedy Kay became a single woman.

I’ve crushed on the team’s athletic trainer for years. I’ve flirted to no avail, so imagine my surprise when I woke up in Sin City with a ring on my finger and my favorite redhead in my bed.

We agree to stay married for one baseball season, just long enough to keep her job safe, but in my mind, I’m using our time together to prove to her I’m husband material.

Kennedy might be reluctant to join in on our game, but it’s one I refuse to lose.

So come on, wife… play along.

Possible Spoilers Ahead

This book is also a baseball romance like the third one that I reviewed. The third book made me realize that I actually might like any sports romance you give me even if I am not a huge fan of the sport in general. However, I did not have nearly as high of hopes for this book because the snippets you get of Isaiah before this book really show off an arrogant immature man which was not appealing to me at all but once I got into his book and could hear his own personal narrative my tune turned real quick! This is probably my favorite book to date hehe.

We learned a bit about Isaiah and Kennedy’s relationship in Kai’s book (book 3) but it was very surface level but still very important to the narrative of this book. Isaiah crushing on Kennedy for years might have seemed pathetic to some in Kai’s book but as soon as Isaiah finds out she is no longer engaged he becomes the man he was destined to be and that’s when I knew I was done for! Well, that and the fact that they fake date… We all know how i feel about fake dating!

When they went to get married in Vegas and Isaiah kept asking if she was sure this was what she wanted my heart literally melted! We love a respectful king!

I do think Kennedy treated him so unfairly at the beginning of this book even if it was due to the pressures of her own family life. However, I do think this made way for an interesting plot point. Isaiah may not have known Kennedy all that well before he fell for her but he believed in fate and just knew she was the one, so he was ready to dive head first into anything she threw at him. I have no clue how he could “fake Date” his own wife who he was madly in love with only to make her ex fiancé jealous… That is just pure torture.

I really like the fact that they were married yet still trying to become each others friend. They were given the perfect opportunity to really get to know one another and grow into love which I felt was a really interesting plot point. Most Fake Dating books I read have this in some level but this book really pulled it off as they were already married so what does it hurt to get to know one another’s deeper secrets and even explore a bit with their intimacy.

Kennedy had a rough childhood, as did Isaiah but different in their own ways. This was a great way for them to connect. Especially because Kennedy was never taken care of directly by a parental figure whereas Isaiah had his older brother Kai who took on that role. Kennedy didn’t need anyone to take care of her but it was nice for her to finally have someone who she knew she could count on to take care of her when she need it and Isaiah was able to provide that for her because of the love he received from his brother.

These characters are probably my favorite so far in this series, which I have probably said before but I can’t help it, they are just so good together! However, the next and final book coming out in April 2025 is about Rio finally getting his chance at love and I don’t know how any of these other love stories could hold a flame to Rio’s.

I will see you in 2025 with my final review for this series! Goodbye, for now, Windy City.

“Grief seems like a privilege, in a way,” she says. “To have loved someone so much that you can’t imagine life without them.”

Synopsis

Kai

I’m a single dad and starting pitcher for Chicago’s MLB team.
I’m stretched too thin, but I don’t want help raising my son.

Each of his previous nannies only lasted a few weeks before I let them go.
Now, my coach is putting his foot down by hiring the one person I can’t fire—his daughter.

Miller Montgomery is the last woman I should fall for. Too wild, too young, and too unattached.

Chicago is just a quick stop for her. I thought I’d be counting down the days until she left, but summer feels too short when I start thinking about forever.

Miller

As a high-end pastry chef who recently won the most prestigious award in my industry, I’m desperate to prove I deserve it. But with a new title comes new pressure, and I can’t create a fresh and inspiring dessert to save my life.

With only two months to get back on track, I should be focusing in the kitchen, but instead, I let my dad talk me into using my time off to nanny for his star player’s kid.

Kai Rhodes forgot how to have fun, and I’m eager to jog his memory. But when he and his son start to feel like home, I have to remind us both that my time in Chicago ends with the summer.

Besides, I’ve always been a runner, and the last thing I want is to get caught.

Review

Possible Small Spoilers Ahead
No surprises here, I of course rated this book Five Stars!

The surprise is that I actually enjoyed a book about Baseball. I am not a huge baseball fan, nine innings is just a tad too much for me. I just don’t find it the most entreating to watch. However, I would much rather go to a baseball game over a football game!

This book is the single dad trope, if I am being honest with you, I have only ever read one other book with this trope and I did enjoy it but this book handled this trope so well! I will be taking recs for any and all single dad tropes from here on out!

Kai only wants what’s best for his son and if that means leaving baseball behind then that’s just what he will do! But of course his team doesn’t want this so they have been very accommodating of his situation, But Kai can not find a nanny he trusts enough with his son. That is until Monty, the head coach, hires his daughter Miller as the nanny and Kai doesn’t have a choice but to let her stay.

Kai can be a bit of a grump but that is exactly why I love him! He might be kind of rough edged on the outside but on the inside he is a true sweetheart! He is everything I want from a male lead! This man is like a walking teddy bear that makes my heart melt. He truly cares so much about every person in his life but because of his past it is really hard to let new people in which made it so much fun to see him let down his guard and see him fall in love with his hot nanny!

Miller was not my favorite character at the start. She is pretty stand off ish so I guess that makes sense haha. She struggles being in one place for too long which we learn from the start so I knew that we would have a rough third act “Breakup” and if you know anything about me its that I hate a third act breakup. Luckily the way it was written I didn’t mind this one. I think the third act break up was more along the lines of this famous proverb , “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours. If not, it was never meant to be.”

Both of our main characters are highly successful adults who are truly independent people. Kai does have his found family to support him but he makes it clear that he is strong enough to handle his own problems but having someone like Miller by his side really brought out the best in him and ultimately brought some much needed joy to him and his sons lives.

This book really focuses on these characters goals and passions in life but what I love most is that it shows that even if you are passionate about your career you may not be happy with that life style. Miller is constantly trying to prove herself to people but most importantly herself. She sets unreasonable goals and expectations for her career because she is great at what she does but being the best at what you do isn’t nearly as rewarding as stepping back and finding joy in the basics again. Sometimes our expectations for ourselves can ruin our true happiness and you got to remove yourself from those situations and find where your true passion began and let go of some of your unrealistic goals to find yourself again.

“Pressure is a privilege, Miller. Expectations are high because you’re successful. If you were average, no one would be waiting on bated breath for you. I think about that every night I take the mound. You just have to decide if your dreams and goals are worth the pressure. If you want to live up to the expectations set for you.”

With every new book I pick up by this author the more and more I fall in love with her writing and character building. I leave each book with a deep love for her characters to the point where I get so sad when I finish her books. I really love that this world is interconnected so I can see everyone’s relationships grow and flourish. I hope you come back for my fourth review for this series “Play Along”, this will be my last review for this author until the fifth and final book comes out in April 2025, so stay tuned!

“I’m not telling you what you should or shouldn’t do with your life. I just don’t want you to be so afraid to fail at something new that it keeps you from finding your happiness when you’re the reason I found mine.”

QOTD: If you had to choose between Football and Baseball, Which do you like more?

Book Review: “The Right Move” By Liz Tomforde

This is the Second book in the “Windy City” Series by Liz Tomforde. I loved the first book so much (See my Full Review Here) But I was a little hesitant to pick up the second. The first book was a hockey romance which is something I love but this one was a basketball romance which I honestly was not interested in. This made me not want to read the second book as I don’t understand the appeal of basketball. However, upon further review my first love was Troy Bolton the Basketball Star in High School Musical so apparently it was easy to slip back to that time of my life.

Synopsis

RYAN

She’s a distraction, that’s what she is.

I’m the newest Captain of the Devils, Chicago’s NBA team, and the last thing I needed this year was for Indy Ivers, my sister’s best friend, to move into my apartment. She’s messy, emotional, and way too tempting.

But when the team’s General Manager vocalizes his blatant disapproval of my promotion to Captain, referring to me as an unapproachable lone wolf with no work-life balance, I can’t think of a better way to convince him otherwise than pretending to date my outgoing roommate.

The only problem? Faking it feels far too natural.

Having a fake girlfriend wasn’t supposed to be messy but having Indy under my roof and in my bed is complicated, especially when she wants all the romantic parts of life that I could never give her.

INDY

I never imagined I’d be living with my best friend’s brother, NBA superstar Ryan Shay. Even more unbelievable? He needs me to act as his loving girlfriend who’s suddenly changed him into a friendly and approachable guy.

Because, well…he’s not. He’s controlling of his space and untrusting of others.

Our arrangement isn’t one-sided, though. I’m in a wedding coming up, one where every one of my childhood friends, including my ex-boyfriend, will be in attendance, and there’s no better date than my ex’s celebrity hero.

Blurred lines make it almost impossible to separate real from fake. Falling for my roommate was never part of the deal, especially when Ryan is quick to remind me that he doesn’t believe in love.

I’m a romantic and can’t help fantasizing that he’ll change, but soon enough, I find myself questioning if sharing a roof with my best friend’s brother was the right move after all

Possible Spoilers Ahead

Like I mentioned above, I was not excited to read a basketball romance but this book really surprised me! Maybe I don’t care too much about the sport as I was originally expected. A football romance might still be too much for me though…

This book follows Stevie’s best friend Indy who is down on her luck and needs a place to stay. Stevie’s brother Ryan now has an empty room so he reluctantly lets Indy stay with him while she saves up for her own place.

This was a really cute fake dating read. Ryan is very Type A and Indy is a walking hurricane, realistically these two would hate each other but with a little forced proximity romance was able to grow. They may have had to fake their relationship at first but it didn’t take long before their little crushes on one another overtook their fake dating. Essentially they were only lying to themselves.

The banter was amazing with these two! I was swooning practically every page, especially when they would talk about Indy’s romance books. Ryan is the walking/breathing book boyfriend that Indy had always dreamt of. Maybe this is why I really liked the book, I am a sucker for a man with book boyfriend potential!

My favorite part of this book is the list they made for one another to help them better themselves. Indy has issues being alone but being left by the man she thought she would marry really had her shook so Ryan was determined to help her learn how to be alone and think of herself for the first time in her life by creating her a list, top of the list was sleeping in her bed alone without a wall of pillows beside her acting as a makeshift person. I love that Ryan was so willing to help Indy even in the beginning when he wasn’t sure he wanted her in his space.

Overall, this book really had me hooked from the beginning and I was truly shocked at how much I loved it! I truly am a sucker for all the characters in this world and I can’t wait to read the rest!

“How else would you get to live a thousand lives in the span of only one? The beauty of fiction is that it makes you feel things on a visceral level. You can cry with those characters, laugh with them. It teaches you to look at another’s perspective, to have empathy. In nonfiction, you simply learn about something instead of feeling it.”
